Sego Ski Co. brings us a great series of footages of the andes mountains being skied in an extreme way by Maxwell Mackenzie, Tait Trautman, Dorian Densmore. Follow the Sodeado crew and some other friends in their trip to Argentina. Here is the first episode of a couple more coming soon. Sit down and enjoy.
The Andes Mountains
The Andes mountains are the longest continental mountain range in the world. They are located in the western edge of South America. The Andean mountains break through 7 countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. Most of the skiable area in this part of the world is located in Argentina and Chile. There are some extreme expeditions to the Bolivian mountains too.
The highest mountain you can find in the Andes is the Aconcagua. It’s elevation is 22841 ft (6962 meters) above sea level. It is located in the Mendoza province, Argentina. The Aconcagua is one of the seven summits, the list of the most important mountaineering objectives. They are the highest peaks of every continent.
This part of the andes mountains is a great option for skiing and snowboarding. It’s where the best ski resorts of South America are located, and they are really affordable. As the mountains have a high elevation the snow is great. You can have excellent days of a good amount of powder, dry snow. Some of the recommended spots to visit are Las Leñas in my opinion the best option if you like freeride and off piste terrain. A resort with more than 200 off piste lines to try. Pretty impressive! In the chilean side you can go to Portillo and ski with the Aconcagua behind your back. Portillo is a great place to try heli ski if you haven’t and you don’t want to miss their spectacular hot tubs with mountain view. It’s an exclusive resort. Few people, few lines, great snow, no party.
If you want a more popular option you can go to Santiago, Chile and accommodate near the three biggest resorts: El Colorado, Valle Nevado or La Parva. You can buy a multiple resort pass and enjoy them all.
